If Ally is the "new Sherriff in town", then based upon my experience, they should be run out of town. In summary:
1) I returned a message from Ally and the representative could not articulate why Ally had called.
2) I called back and was told that there was an issue with my credit report (which I had just pulled 2 days prior - it was complete). This was not the reason as it turns out.
3) Received an attestation letter which I completed with ID from the list provided by Ally. Received a subsequent e-mail to contact Ally - they indicated that they wanted DIFFERENT information than what I had provided (at Ally's request).
In my last call, I told Ally to cancel my application and close my account. I don't want to deal with a company that can't give me correct, straight forward answers. Anyways, I sent an e-mail to Tracie Crook, who I believe is the CEO of Resmor (parent company of Ally) to express my disgust with them wasting my time. I'll look elsewhere for the extra0.8% that I would have been earning.

If you go to the CDIC website and check the list of members you will never see ALLY as one of them. What you will see is that ResMor Trust, only, is a member.
I had the devil of a time getting Ally to send me a letter confirming that all deposits made in the name of Ally were covered by CDIC.I never did receive this absolute assurance. Nor would they confirm that the deposits went into the funds of ResMor Trust which, of course, would mean that they were covered by The CDIC.
I eventually sent an email to the Gov. of Canada Finance Department asking for this confirmation since the CDIC is a Crown Corporation. That was back in January and I am still waiting for a reply!!
My suggestion to the unwary is to be very careful in this instance.

Agreed, Bob. Thanks for your clarification. The Ally rumours are being spread by a bunch of pro-ING and pro-ICICI people trying to peddle their referral codes and garner referral bonuses from those institutions. From a customer service standpoint, by the way, Ally wins hands down. ING relies on outsourced customer service to third-world countries and is reluctant to go off-script and it's taken me several e-mails and I still don't have a straightforward question. Alas, I digress.
Ally is a product of ResMor Trust Company, a CDIC member. Your Ally deposits are 100% CDIC insured and there are ways to exceed the $100,000 insured limit. Put money in a joint account, money in a sole account (TFSAs are counted as non-registered sole deposits), money in your own RRSP and you could be insured for $300,000 (if $100,000 in each).
Cheers,
Doug
